SUMMARY:Johnny Óg Connolly & Mícheál Darby
DESCRIPTION:Johnny Og Connolly is a renowned traditional musician and composer from the Conamara Gaeltacht. He plays accordion and melodeon. His first solo album ‘Aisling Yoshua ‘ won Folk album of the year in 2011. In his compositional work he engages a lot with Irish language poetry and has composed two song cycles\, one of them based on the poetry of Mairtin Ó Direáin with Liam Ó Maonlaí on vocals. His latest commision was to write a music series based on the life of his father\, renowned melodeon player Johnny Connolly. An Cosan Draiochta (The Enchanted Path) has just completed a nationwide tour to great acclaim in late 2022. Johnny Og is currently researching the music of Conamara. \nMícheál Darby is from Indreabhán in Connemara. He is recognized as a master of the ‘small box’ or the melodeon. It was the recordings of PJ Hernon\, the great box player from Carna\, that inspired his interest in the melodeon at a young age and he was so amazed by the different\, hearty sound of that little box. After that\, he managed to find the melodic music of Bobby Gardiner from Co. Clare and that attracted him even more. It is An tOileán Aerach by Johnny Pádraic Pheter Ó Conghaile from Ennis Beracháin that put the music of the melodeon and\, in fact\, it was Johnny who most stimulated Míchíl’s interest in the little box. \nMícheál has released two CDs\, Bosca Bideach (2000) and An Rithim Réidh (2017). This is how Neansaí Ní Choisdealbha\, Music Editor of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta\, described Michéal Darby’s style while making reference to the album An Rithim Réidh; “the waltz ‘Meánuisce na Mara’ and the slow tune ‘Cúirt Bhaile Nua’ give us a great insight into the beautiful\, smooth\, studious style of Micheál Darby’. Micheál Darby is living in Na hAille in Indreabhán with his wife\, the sean-nós singer\, Odí Ní Chéilleachair\, and his musical children. \nTickets availalbe here:   https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/623587034607

SUMMARY:The Whileaways
DESCRIPTION:The Whileaways are Noelie McDonnell\, Noriana Kennedy and Nicola Joyce\, three accomplished singers who had each toured and recorded extensively with their separate projects before coming together as a band. With over a dozen albums to their collective credit\, and having played gigs and festivals all over the world\, they began to admire each other’s singing at sessions in their home-town of Galway. Since coming together they have toured all over the world\, and been nominated for Best Group and Best Album in the RTÉ Folk Awards\, and garnered high praise from the music press both at home and abroad. These three singers are cut from the same cloth and weave a tapestry of harmonies and beautifully crafted original songs. Their sound is true and their delivery is undeniably captivating. Their music “hollers for a chance to be heard in a live setting\, so rich is its lyrical tapestry” (Irish Times). \nTickets can be purchased here:   https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/623531368107

SUMMARY:Selvage
DESCRIPTION:The Galway-based company\, Brú Theatre\, are bringing an exciting new multi-disciplinary show called ‘Selvage’ to the Áras Éanna theatre on Saturday\, October 8 (8pm). \nWritten by Brú Theatre’s artistic director James Riordan and directed by Lara Campbell\, ‘Selvage’ is a highly visual theatrical event using different forms of live performance to tell the story of Jo as his fairytale falters and his ‘gnaw’ begins to bite. \nRiordan performs in this dark\, yet joyous\, show about unravelling tightly wound modern anxieties. \nAudiences will experience an energetic\, imaginative and funny piece of physical theatre exploring themes of charity\, self-help and religion. It imaginatively examines the countless avenues people trudge in an effort to calm themselves when deep down a ‘gnaw’ is niggling. Incorporating puppetry\, new writing and choreographed movement\, ‘Selvage’ will also feature live\, original music from musician and composer Anna Mullarkey. \n‘Selvage’ is coming to Inis Oirr as part of a nationwide tour taking in eight venues after sell out runs in Galway in 2019. The show was nominated for two Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2020\, including Best Actor for James Riordan and Best Lighting for Sarah Jane Shiels. \nBrú Theatre were the first theatre company to perform here at Áras Éanna after the easing of Covid 19 restrictions last year\, when they staged the sold out virtual reality ‘Ar Ais Arís’ show outdoors\, and we are delighted to welcome them back to our theatre. \nAdmission is just €5 on the door.

Imagine a life without their vision\, without their dreams\,” says Rónán Mac Con Iomaire of Údarás na Gaeltachta. \n“They make the world aware of who we\, as a Gaeltacht community\, are and they also make us aware of who we are as a community. They nurture us as a community and\, as a community\, we are grateful for that. \n“This exhibition provides\, not only an insight into 40 years of Gaeltacht art\, but also an insight into 40 years of Údarás na Gaeltachta and forty years of the community spirit which demanded the establishment of Údarás na Gaeltachta. That spirit still remains.” \nEalaín na Gaeltachta promotes the development of the contemporary and the traditional arts in the Gaeltacht and has been joint venture between Údarás na Gaeltachta and the Arts Council since 1997. \nThe 40 artists whose work will be exhibited as part of Dath an Dóchais are: Áine Ní Chíobháin Alannah Robbins Andrew Duggan Aoife Casby Bernadette Cotter Bob Quinn Brendan O’ Sullivan Brian Bourke\nCaoimhghin Ó Fraithile Cathal McGinley Ceara Conway Ciara O’ Flynn Clare Langan Clare Cashman Danny Chóil Dan Ó Flatharta RIP Deirdre McKenna Donnacha Quilty Heidi Nguyen Helen Quill Ian Gordon Ian Joyce Katrina Quille Karol Mac Gairbheith Kevin McGee Lelia Ní Chathmhaoil Maria Simonds-Gooding Niall Naessens Nuala Ní Fhlathúin Róisín Ní Chionnfhaolaidh Sandra Landers Sarah Lewtas Pádraic Reaney Patsy Dan Rodgers RIP Ruairí Rodgers Seán Cathal Ó Coileáin Seán Ó Flaithearta\nTadhg McSweeney RIP Tomás Ó Cíobháin Úna Ní Shé Úna Quigley. \n \n \nCathal McGinley. SUMMARY:Michael Mulcahy
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring the first ever artist in residence at Áras Éanna\, Michael Mulcahy\, will open at the arts centre on Friday\, July 8 (8pm). \nMick Mulcahy is one of Ireland’s most famous expressionist artists and showcased his work to the people of Inis Oirr after spending a winter on the island in the late 1980s. From there\, the idea to create an arts centre on our small Gaeltacht island took hold. \nMick recently spent a month in our studio at Áras Éanna (February 2022) after returning to Inis Oirr for our 21st birthday celebrations in July 2021. \nMany visitors to the island saw him produce stunning paintings outdoors\, next to the island’s shop\, last summer. \nHe is a member of Aosdana\, the highest honour given to Irish artists\, and we are delighted to welcome Mick back to Inis Oirr to feature an exhibition of his acclaimed art work at the arts centre this summer. \nHis exhibition of new paintings at Áras Éanna is entitled Nowhere to Hide at Sea.
