SUMMARY:The Whileaways
DESCRIPTION:The Whileaways are Noelie McDonnell\, Noriana Kennedy and Nicola Joyce\, three accomplished singers who had each toured and recorded extensively with their separate projects before coming together as a band. With over a dozen albums to their collective credit\, and having played gigs and festivals all over the world\, they began to admire each other’s singing at sessions in their home-town of Galway. Since coming together they have toured all over the world\, and been nominated for Best Group and Best Album in the RTÉ Folk Awards\, and garnered high praise from the music press both at home and abroad. These three singers are cut from the same cloth and weave a tapestry of harmonies and beautifully crafted original songs. Their sound is true and their delivery is undeniably captivating. Their music “hollers for a chance to be heard in a live setting\, so rich is its lyrical tapestry” (Irish Times). \nTickets can be purchased here:   https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/623531368107

SUMMARY:Selvage
DESCRIPTION:The Galway-based company\, Brú Theatre\, are bringing an exciting new multi-disciplinary show called ‘Selvage’ to the Áras Éanna theatre on Saturday\, October 8 (8pm). \nWritten by Brú Theatre’s artistic director James Riordan and directed by Lara Campbell\, ‘Selvage’ is a highly visual theatrical event using different forms of live performance to tell the story of Jo as his fairytale falters and his ‘gnaw’ begins to bite. \nRiordan performs in this dark\, yet joyous\, show about unravelling tightly wound modern anxieties. \nAudiences will experience an energetic\, imaginative and funny piece of physical theatre exploring themes of charity\, self-help and religion. It imaginatively examines the countless avenues people trudge in an effort to calm themselves when deep down a ‘gnaw’ is niggling. Incorporating puppetry\, new writing and choreographed movement\, ‘Selvage’ will also feature live\, original music from musician and composer Anna Mullarkey. \n‘Selvage’ is coming to Inis Oirr as part of a nationwide tour taking in eight venues after sell out runs in Galway in 2019. The show was nominated for two Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2020\, including Best Actor for James Riordan and Best Lighting for Sarah Jane Shiels. \nBrú Theatre were the first theatre company to perform here at Áras Éanna after the easing of Covid 19 restrictions last year\, when they staged the sold out virtual reality ‘Ar Ais Arís’ show outdoors\, and we are delighted to welcome them back to our theatre. \nAdmission is just €5 on the door.

At just 3km long by 3km wide\, visitors can easily traverse the island by foot to discover sound works housed across the island. \nA dedicated virtual programme of events for Ars Electronica 2020 (https://ars.electronica.art/keplersgardens/en/) the world-renowned festival for art\, technology and society\, will accompany the main programme from 9 – 11 September. Titled Garden GALWAY by Aerial/Sparks\, events include a presentation of acoustic works and conversations between artists and marine scientists. \nAerial / Sparks has taken shape through a long-term collaboration with the Marine Institute\, the national agency responsible for marine research\, technology development and innovation in Ireland. Since 2017\, artists from Ireland\, Germany\, England and Slovenia have taken part in 7 ocean surveys and a passage from Galway to Hamburg on the RV Celtic Explorer\, one of the few marine research vessels with sonic capabilities. \nThe utopian potential of radio was evoked by the Russian Futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922). The universal communicative power of the medium resonated with the ambitious social projects and artistic visions that sprouted across the globe in the wake of the First World War. Khlebnikov’s vision encompasses both the educational and aesthetic domains: radio is imagined as a medium both for the universal edification of mankind and for its musical delectation. Aerial/Sparks started its journey by exploring the potential of radio communication to reimagine our relationship with the ocean. Each artist’s experience of ocean and water masses around Ireland and Europe has informed the production of individual work for audio and radio listening.

SUMMARY:Áras Éanna Live – Róisín Elsafty
DESCRIPTION:From the Conamara heartland of Galway\, Róisín remembers always being able to sing; in fact\, it came so naturally as a child that she sang before learning to speak.  Her mother Treasa inspired her to sing in the age-old art of Irish unaccompanied song\, in both her native Irish and her second language\, English.  These songs can be hundreds of years old\, often handed down orally through generations and peculiar to small districts within regions – even next-door neighbours can diverge in their interpretation of a song! \nListening to Róisín sing is a heart-warming experience and one feels thrilled and privileged in her performing presence.  A two-time winner of the Irish Music Association award for Best Sean-Nós Singer\, Róisín performs regularly with the celebrated trio Elsafty\, Armstrong & Browne.  She also enjoys eclectic musical collaborations from early Irish music to jazz\, and works with many well-known mainstream Irish musicians. \nRóisín’s critically acclaimed solo album ‘Má Bhíonn Tú Liom’ was described as\, “…a thing of beauty from beginning to end” in The Irish Times. \nWith Ronan Browne\, she released a sumptuous album of both well known and rare Christmas carols\, all in the evocative beauty of the Irish language; ‘Amhráin na Nollag’\, has already become a yearly favourite on Irish radio.  “In this age of endless Christmas records is there anything out there that’s still fresh and interesting?  Well\, in the case of Irish language duo Róisín Elsafty and Ronan Browne\, the answer is a resounding YES…!!!” (Bright Young Folk web review). \nRóisín is a seasoned performer\, both on the big international stages throughout Europe\, and even China\, but also in more intimate settings at home and abroad. \nThis evening’s performance promises to be of the more intimate variety\, as Róisín sings some of her personal favourites\, from her home to yours!
