SUMMARY:Gile na Gile - Brightness of Brightness The Music and Journeys of Aodhagáin Ó Rathaille
DESCRIPTION:Composed and presented by Lorcán Mac Mathúna (voice)\, Martin Tourish (accordion)\, and Éamonn Galldubh (pipes and flute). \nThe Gaelic world fell apart during the life of Aodhagáin Ó Rathaille\, and he was one of the leading chroniclers of this traumatic turn in Irish history and literature. He was born during the era of the Bardic School but died in poverty during penal times and the times of the subverted Bardic Court. He was one of the chief generators of the new movement in literature which produced the Aisling; the music of hope during a hopeless first. \nThe Rathailleach wrote deep\, bold and fierce poetry. His poetry was a savage witness to a brutal and tragic time\, written with clarity and always an eye for beauty in words. He wrote lyrically\, with musical rhythm and alliterative pathos. The most capable poet of a new era of Irish. A poet who has not yet been surpassed. With his sui generis writings in the newly evolving style of Irish poetry\, it can be said that O Rathaille is the father of modern Irish literature. \nWe will travel with O Rathaille through his poetry. Poetry that stands as one of the clearest witnesses of the 18th Century in Ireland. Musical\, lyrical poetry\, which gave the poet’s perspective on a world that\, was changing traumatically. His unique lyrics give us a perspective divided between despair and optimism. \nFriday 17 October 21:00p.m. \nTicktets €20/25 on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF
DESCRIPTION:An evening of storytelling with Tommy Tiernan & Martin Shaw \nStorytelling is a way of talking about the stranger side of life. There’s a secret history of the world hidden in a fairy tale. Tommy Tiernan and Martin Shaw are setting out on adventure and inviting you to come with them. Not stand-up\, not literary recital\, this is a kind of dreaming with your eyes open. It’s a world where you get lost on the way home from the fair\, or a cow becomes a hill\, or a woman has a fox tail hidden under her skirt. All of this is happening all the time\, and Tiernan and Shaw are bringing the tales to prove it. \n  \nTickets €25 on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Achill Island\, Basking Shark Fishermen
DESCRIPTION:Achill Island\, Basking Shark Fishermen is a musical response to Achill Island’s basking shark fishing industry\, preserving this important part of Achill’s heritage for future generations. \nFollowing the release of their first album Isle of the Eagle in August 2023\, The Achill Sound presents its latest project focused on preserving the oral history and stories of the basking shark industry on Achill Island during the 20th century. This unique and immersive performance sensitively imparts Achill’s shark fishing history\, combining recordings\, archival footage\, and original visuals with traditional and newly composed Irish music and song. \nAchill-based musician Graham Sweeney and Glasgow-based producer John Michael Berry\, whose family also hails from the island\, are the duo behind The Achill Sound. Their aim with this project is to continue their shared objective of keeping Achill’s history and culture alive. \nGraham Sweeney said\,“My family had a large involvement in the industry\, which is why I viewed it with a heavy heart and anger. It is only in recent years that I see both sides of the story; on a quiet island with little industry\, forcing many people to leave home for work\, you cannot blame them for wanting to survive and support their families. There was not a great understanding of damaging a species towards extinction. All that the local people knew was survival. I wanted to shine a light on the days gone by by recording as many first-hand accounts and stories as possible. While some community members recall ‘the glory days of the shark fishing’\, others mourn the loss of these magnificent\, harmless giants of the ocean.” \nProudly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland\, the live presentation of the Achill Island\, Basking Shark Fishermen project includes audio-visuals by producer John Michael Berry\, and traditional and newly composed Irish music by Graham Sweeney (guitar and vocals)\, Lisa Fukuda (fiddle) and Johnny Butler (uilleann pipes). These musicians are part of The Achill Sound and have a personal connection to keeping history and culture alive. \nThe story of Achill Island’s basking shark fishing industry is beautifully explored in this unique piece incorporating traditional and visual art forms\, to create an immersive live musical performance capturing an important historical chapter of Achill Island’s and Ireland’s marine heritage. \nTickets €25/€20 on eventbrite \n.

SUMMARY:By the Light of the Silvery Moon
DESCRIPTION:16+ Show \n“A special evening of Irish Stories for grown-ups told through words\, sounds and music in the bardic style. \nStrongly influenced by previous bards like Raifterian File\, Brian Merriman and Aindrias Mac Cruitín\, this tour will see the wandering bard\, with his rustic violin and other such accompaniment \, Brian Flemming on percussion & Ashling Lyons on harp and concertina\, together they travel the roads of Ireland telling tales and short stories to eager audiences. \n“He’s a waterboy seanchai\, the pied piper of mischief. SUMMARY:Padraig Jack
DESCRIPTION:  \nRTE Folk Music Awards nominee Padraig Jack Ó Flaithearta delivers a totally engaging performance which comprises a series of moments which are supported by his disarming charm\, wit\, perspectives on society\, Irish history and of course top quality songs in both English and Irish. Padraig Jack released his second album called ‘These Shores’ in October 2024 to critical acclaim with a sold-out album launch in Galway while the album’s lead single ‘Long Street’ topped the RTE Airplay Chart for two consecutive weeks . A native of the the Aran islands in the Irish speaking Gaeltacht\, a place that has produced the writers Liam O’Flaithearta\, Máirtín Ó’Direáin and Breandán Ó’hEithir\, Padraig is proudly bilingual both as a conversationalist and a songwriter and writes and sings meaningful songs on guitar and piano in Irish Gaelic and English. With influences from James Taylor and The Eagles to Van Morrison\, Sinead O’Connor and Shane McGowan\, Padraig appreciates strong songwriting with a distinct point of view. \nWith plaudits from industry legends like Mike Scott\, Sharon Shannon and Miles Hunt\, and laudatory reviews from the likes of Hot Press\, Padraig Jack has already made his mark on the Irish music scene. Padraig is very proud to play on neighboring islands in Inis Oírr and Inis Meáin as well as making his debut at the Big Top for the Galway International Arts Festival as special guest to the Saw Doctors before performing live on TG4 for the launch of Fleadh na hEireann in August 24. So far this year\, Padraig appeared at Dublin TradFest’\, Galway’s bilingual festival ‘Tonnta’ before a tour in the UK and a trip to Montreal where he was selected to represent Ireland at the prestigious Folk Alliance in association with Culture Ireland. \nTickets €25 & €20 here

SUMMARY:Julie Feeney
DESCRIPTION:Julie Feeney\nJulie Feeney’s sell-out shows have riveted audiences and critics all over the world. She performs as solo\, duo\, with ensemble\, with choirs or with full orchestra. She composes\, arranges and orchestrates all of her own music and writes all of her words. Her three albums have been widely critically acclaimed. She is winner of the Choice Music Prize for ‘Irish Album of the Year’ for her self-produced debut album 13 Songs. Her third album Clocks went straight to No. 1 in the Independent Irish Album Charts on its Irish release. It was voted ‘Best Album’ in The Irish Times ‘Album of the Year’ and it was also shortlisted for the Choice Music Prize. \nIn her live shows she combines her “mesmerizing stage presence and eccentric pop genius” (Hot Press) with her unquestionably original sound; and her innovative\, avant-garde approach\, while rooted in classical music\, straddles both the pop and theatrical worlds. \nJulie is a true artist with immense vision. Sharp witted\, unpretentious and fiercely passionate she is a genuine artist and a hugely enjoyable performer. This ‘not to be missed’ concert will see Julie performing music from her 3 albums and will be accompanied by the brilliant Cormac De Barra with whom she has performed with regularly over the years. \nÁras Éanna are delighted to have Julie as an Artist in residence for the month of August. Inis Oirr is a place very close to her heart. \nCormac De Barra\nCormac is a third generation harper in a family of Irish-speaking singers and musicians raised in Dublin\, but with roots firmly in County Cork. \nHe has recorded and toured with many of Ireland’s foremost artists including Hazel O’Connor\, Julie Feeney\, Brian Kennedy\, Moya Brennan and Clannad. HIs most recent tour at home was the Music Network tour of Ireland with Altan’s Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and piper\, Mark Redmond. \nThe fourth album in the Voices & Harps series – his collaboration with Moya Brennan – was released in May 2024. \nCormac has also worked in television for over two decades – as presenter and director of TG4’s arts series Imeall and as music supervisor on Gradam Ceoil TG4 as well as projects for Sky Arts\, RTE1 and Cúla4. \nTickets €15/€20  ar eventbrite \nPhoto credits: Ruth Medjber

SUMMARY:Tom Portman and Maciej Zavoronek
DESCRIPTION:Train to Nowhere\, a concert with Tom Portman and Maciej Zavoronek  – Friday 2nd August 8:30pm \nTom Portman: Vocals\, Guitar & Dobro (slide guitar) and Maciej Zavoronek on Harmonica\, Clarinet and Saxophone \nOriginal music inspired by Country Blues\, Jazz and a few covers of Hank Williams\, Mississpi John Hurt\, J.J Cale and Eric Bibb. \n‘Train to Nowhere’ is a new\, raw\, stripped back rootsy country blues album from Tom Portman. It couples deft songwriting with intricate guitar and dobro playing that is the hallmark of Tom’s work. Portman is joined on this album by maestro Maciej (Magic) Zaworonek’s poetic harmonica lines. The title track ‘Train to Nowhere’ was penned by Australian song writer Kevin Lym\, to a Dobro melody Tom was playing as they busked & drifted their way around the south of France many years ago. Tom’s songs on this album feature his wry humor\, but also contain the subtle depth that one expects from a songwriter of Portman’s standing. The album also includes cover versions of Tom’s songwriting heroes Hank Williams\, Tim O’Brien and Eric Bibb. \n  \nTickets €15/€20 available here \n
