SUMMARY:Achill Island\, Basking Shark Fishermen
DESCRIPTION:Achill Island\, Basking Shark Fishermen is a musical response to Achill Island’s basking shark fishing industry\, preserving this important part of Achill’s heritage for future generations. \nFollowing the release of their first album Isle of the Eagle in August 2023\, The Achill Sound presents its latest project focused on preserving the oral history and stories of the basking shark industry on Achill Island during the 20th century. This unique and immersive performance sensitively imparts Achill’s shark fishing history\, combining recordings\, archival footage\, and original visuals with traditional and newly composed Irish music and song. \nAchill-based musician Graham Sweeney and Glasgow-based producer John Michael Berry\, whose family also hails from the island\, are the duo behind The Achill Sound. Their aim with this project is to continue their shared objective of keeping Achill’s history and culture alive. \nGraham Sweeney said\,“My family had a large involvement in the industry\, which is why I viewed it with a heavy heart and anger. It is only in recent years that I see both sides of the story; on a quiet island with little industry\, forcing many people to leave home for work\, you cannot blame them for wanting to survive and support their families. There was not a great understanding of damaging a species towards extinction. All that the local people knew was survival. I wanted to shine a light on the days gone by by recording as many first-hand accounts and stories as possible. While some community members recall ‘the glory days of the shark fishing’\, others mourn the loss of these magnificent\, harmless giants of the ocean.” \nProudly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland\, the live presentation of the Achill Island\, Basking Shark Fishermen project includes audio-visuals by producer John Michael Berry\, and traditional and newly composed Irish music by Graham Sweeney (guitar and vocals)\, Lisa Fukuda (fiddle) and Johnny Butler (uilleann pipes). These musicians are part of The Achill Sound and have a personal connection to keeping history and culture alive. \nThe story of Achill Island’s basking shark fishing industry is beautifully explored in this unique piece incorporating traditional and visual art forms\, to create an immersive live musical performance capturing an important historical chapter of Achill Island’s and Ireland’s marine heritage. \nTickets €25/€20 on eventbrite \n.

SUMMARY:Vixen
DESCRIPTION:It is the first anniversary of Martin’s death- Angie’s lover- and his family has come to visit his grave. Angie watches the mourners from the safety of her car\, hidden under the Yew tree. She remains unseen\, her own grief buried deep within. She remembers the foxes\, appearing in formation like a string of ugly thoughts…..VIXEN written by Helen Casey and performed by Rose Henderson with Daire Kelly as technical operator\, is a compelling psychological drama of one woman’s resilience\, determination and desperation to name the love that was hers\, but belonged to another. Both haunting and mesmerizing\, it is a visceral exploration of love\, unspoken loss and uncomfortable truths. As we are drawn further into Angie’s world\, the emotional rollercoaster plunges from the frothy highs to a much darker terrain filled with suspense and a gnawing grief. Tis better to have loved and lost…or is it? \nTickets €15/€20  available  here

Dan is a man on a mission; a mission to scatter\, maim or kill every crow that has ever blighted his land and his life. However\, he gets distracted easily by flights of the imagination and memories of events from his past and a weekly schedule of funerals and masses that he must attend\, imagined conversations with his beloved sheepdog\, and a stream of racing commentators\, TV chefs and David Attenborough – all so that he can hear a voice that is not his own. “Hilarious Dark Comedy” & “Brilliant” – Arena\, RTE “Kenny is Brilliant in this” – Irish Examiner

SUMMARY:Are you there Una? SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:Galway Theatre Festival presents ARE YOU THERE UNA? by Elaine Mears \nThe late Una Taaffe continues to inspire many far-fetched tales in her native Galway. \nAre you there Una? is a reclamation and restoration portrait of Una. It explores collected stories\, interviews\, personal memorabilia\, and fragments of memories of Una\, as a means of peeling back the layers of myth-making and finding the real person beneath. Una’s life speaks to wider concerns of finding a sense of identity and belonging\, how we read isolation\, eccentricity and mental illness\, and how we demystify these.\nThe piece incorporates live music performance from Anna Mullarkey and video design by Jennifer Cunningham.\nAudience Age Range: 14+\nSupported by the Arts Council\, Galway City Council\, Galway County Council and Galway Theatre Festival.
