SUMMARY:Galway Cartoon Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Galway Cartoon Festival is returning to Inis Oirr for the third year with three exhibitions in the Áras Éanna gallery and some events on the island in early October. \nOn Tuesday\, October 4\, the festival will launch the third annual ‘Tarraing É I nGaeilge’ exhibition\, featuring some of the leading cartoonists in Ireland\, as well as ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ celebrating the 70th birthday of Tom Mathews\, a regular visitor to Inis Oirr\, and ‘James Joyce Remembered’. \nThe launch of three exhibitions will see some of Ireland’s best cartoonists enjoy their annual visit to our Gaeltacht island\, where they will be encouraged to draw “live” on a wall in the Áras Éanna gallery. \nOn the following day\, Galway-based artist Margaret Nolan will unveil a painted plaque at Tigh Ned\, the island’s legendary music pub\, which will feature a satirical history of the pub. It is part of a trail of plaques across Galway for the festival. \n\nTom Mathews working in Tigh Ned during one of his regular visits to the island.

SUMMARY:Cloch / Stone
DESCRIPTION:Photograph by Hwan Jin Jo (Jeju Island\, Korea)\nA photographic exhibition with artists Cormac Coyne (Inis Oirr)\, Jacqui Devenney Reed (Donegal)\, and Hwan Jin Jo (Jeju Island\, Korea) opens in the gallery at Aras Eanna Ionad Ealaine this evening. \nThe opening of the exhibition (8.30pm) also marks the official welcome of a group of stone masons from Jeju Island\, Korea\, and delegates from the Irish Korean Stone Culture Art Exchange 2022 to Inis Oirr for the Féile na gCloch festival this weekend. \nSince the dawn of civilisation stone has left clues to our ancestors through carvings\, structures\, walls and buildings. From burial chambers\, dolmens to mounds of stone atop mountains marking a burial site of a legendary hero\, the round towers\, holy wells and ornate Celtic tall crosses depicting early Christianity and gateposts\, millstones\, plaques and sea markers all leaving clues to how our ancestors lived. \nÁras Éanna Arts Centre\, Inis Oírr\, is delighted to commisson these exceptional photographers to produce an exhibition celebrating stone. \nTheir brief for this exhibition was one word ‘Stone’. \nLocal musicians will perform live music at the arts centre for the launch. All Féile na gCloch attendees and anyone on Inis Oirr this evening is invited to attend. \nThe exhibition runs until Sunday\, September 25 (11 to 4pm\, except Monday). \n  \nPhotograph by Jacqui Devnney Reed.\n \nA view of Inis Oirr and the Cliffs of Moher. Photograph by Cormac Coyne.\nWhile you are here\, why not browse through Cormac Coyne’s wonderful 2020 online exhibition ‘Inis Oirr in Lockdown’. Cormac continued to take photos of the island when restrictions prevented non-islanders travelling to Inis Oirr. \nhttp://aras-eanna.ie/en/project/cormac-coyne-inis-oirr-in-lockdown/

SUMMARY:Michael Mulcahy
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring the first ever artist in residence at Áras Éanna\, Michael Mulcahy\, will open at the arts centre on Friday\, July 8 (8pm). \nMick Mulcahy is one of Ireland’s most famous expressionist artists and showcased his work to the people of Inis Oirr after spending a winter on the island in the late 1980s. From there\, the idea to create an arts centre on our small Gaeltacht island took hold. \nMick recently spent a month in our studio at Áras Éanna (February 2022) after returning to Inis Oirr for our 21st birthday celebrations in July 2021. \nMany visitors to the island saw him produce stunning paintings outdoors\, next to the island’s shop\, last summer. \nHe is a member of Aosdana\, the highest honour given to Irish artists\, and we are delighted to welcome Mick back to Inis Oirr to feature an exhibition of his acclaimed art work at the arts centre this summer. \nHis exhibition of new paintings at Áras Éanna is entitled Nowhere to Hide at Sea.
