SUMMARY:Tom Portman and Maciej Zavoronek
DESCRIPTION:Train to Nowhere\, a concert with Tom Portman and Maciej Zavoronek  – Friday 2nd August 8:30pm \nTom Portman: Vocals\, Guitar & Dobro (slide guitar) and Maciej Zavoronek on Harmonica\, Clarinet and Saxophone \nOriginal music inspired by Country Blues\, Jazz and a few covers of Hank Williams\, Mississpi John Hurt\, J.J Cale and Eric Bibb. \n‘Train to Nowhere’ is a new\, raw\, stripped back rootsy country blues album from Tom Portman. It couples deft songwriting with intricate guitar and dobro playing that is the hallmark of Tom’s work. Portman is joined on this album by maestro Maciej (Magic) Zaworonek’s poetic harmonica lines. The title track ‘Train to Nowhere’ was penned by Australian song writer Kevin Lym\, to a Dobro melody Tom was playing as they busked & drifted their way around the south of France many years ago. Tom’s songs on this album feature his wry humor\, but also contain the subtle depth that one expects from a songwriter of Portman’s standing. The album also includes cover versions of Tom’s songwriting heroes Hank Williams\, Tim O’Brien and Eric Bibb. \n  \nTickets €15/€20 available here \n

Crime (Acoustic) will feature Bronwyn Adams (violin and vocals)\, Simon Bonney (vocals) and Joshua Murphy (acoustic guitar and vocals) and will operate in addition to the bigger full-electric line-up. It will perform songs from the Crime back catalogue as well as selected songs from Simon’s solo recordings. \nTickets €15/€20 available here \nSpecial promo two tickets for price of one for a short time only \n  \nPhoto credit: Christiania Krueger

SUMMARY:Selvage
DESCRIPTION:The Galway-based company\, Brú Theatre\, are bringing an exciting new multi-disciplinary show called ‘Selvage’ to the Áras Éanna theatre on Saturday\, October 8 (8pm). \nWritten by Brú Theatre’s artistic director James Riordan and directed by Lara Campbell\, ‘Selvage’ is a highly visual theatrical event using different forms of live performance to tell the story of Jo as his fairytale falters and his ‘gnaw’ begins to bite. \nRiordan performs in this dark\, yet joyous\, show about unravelling tightly wound modern anxieties. \nAudiences will experience an energetic\, imaginative and funny piece of physical theatre exploring themes of charity\, self-help and religion. It imaginatively examines the countless avenues people trudge in an effort to calm themselves when deep down a ‘gnaw’ is niggling. Incorporating puppetry\, new writing and choreographed movement\, ‘Selvage’ will also feature live\, original music from musician and composer Anna Mullarkey. \n‘Selvage’ is coming to Inis Oirr as part of a nationwide tour taking in eight venues after sell out runs in Galway in 2019. The show was nominated for two Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2020\, including Best Actor for James Riordan and Best Lighting for Sarah Jane Shiels. \nBrú Theatre were the first theatre company to perform here at Áras Éanna after the easing of Covid 19 restrictions last year\, when they staged the sold out virtual reality ‘Ar Ais Arís’ show outdoors\, and we are delighted to welcome them back to our theatre. \nAdmission is just €5 on the door.

SUMMARY:Aerial / Sparks – Galway 2020
DESCRIPTION:Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture presents AERIAL/SPARKS by Louise Manifold in partnership with the Marine Institute Ireland and in association with the Commissioners of Irish Lights; Áras Éanna\, Inis Oírr; and Ars Electronica 2020. Supported through Arts Council of Ireland Project Awards 2017 and 2019.  \nDate: 11 – 28 September \nLocation: Inis Oírr \nIn person \nOpening Times: Wednesday to Sunday\, 11 am – 5pm \nAerial/Sparks\, created by Irish artist Louise Manifold for Galway’s European Capital of Culture 2020\, invites you to connect in person and online with one of the last unknown spaces on earth\, the ocean wilderness. Seven artists\, writers and composers from across Europe have produced a series of compelling standalone artworks for exhibition and radio broadcast\, inspired by their experiences of joining research expeditions on board the Marine Institute Ireland’s RV Celtic Explorer. \nParticipating artists: Ailís Ní Ríain (IRL)\, Carol Anne Connolly (IRL)\, David Stalling (DE)\, Kennedy Browne (IRL)\, Kevin Barry (IRL)\, Magz Hall (EN) and Robertina Šebjanič (SI). \nThe rugged beauty of Inis Oírr\, the smallest of the Aran Islands\, is the setting for Aerial/Sparks. Positioned between the relative calmness of Galway Bay and the wildness of the Atlantic\, and immersed in maritime culture\, Inis Oírr is the ideal host location. At just 3km long by 3km wide\, visitors can easily traverse the island by foot to discover sound works housed across the island. \nA dedicated virtual programme of events for Ars Electronica 2020 (https://ars.electronica.art/keplersgardens/en/) the world-renowned festival for art\, technology and society\, will accompany the main programme from 9 – 11 September. Titled Garden GALWAY by Aerial/Sparks\, events include a presentation of acoustic works and conversations between artists and marine scientists. \nAerial / Sparks has taken shape through a long-term collaboration with the Marine Institute\, the national agency responsible for marine research\, technology development and innovation in Ireland. Since 2017\, artists from Ireland\, Germany\, England and Slovenia have taken part in 7 ocean surveys and a passage from Galway to Hamburg on the RV Celtic Explorer\, one of the few marine research vessels with sonic capabilities. \nThe utopian potential of radio was evoked by the Russian Futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922). The universal communicative power of the medium resonated with the ambitious social projects and artistic visions that sprouted across the globe in the wake of the First World War. Khlebnikov’s vision encompasses both the educational and aesthetic domains: radio is imagined as a medium both for the universal edification of mankind and for its musical delectation. Aerial/Sparks started its journey by exploring the potential of radio communication to reimagine our relationship with the ocean. Each artist’s experience of ocean and water masses around Ireland and Europe has informed the production of individual work for audio and radio listening.
